Palau was born in the 19th century to facilitate links with the islands of La Maddalena. It has a famous touristic port. The road leading to Santa Teresa provides access to Porto Rafael, Punta Sardegna a Mare, and Porto Pollo with its long beach, called “Liscia”, divided into two parts by the Isola dei Gabbiani, an ideal place for surfers.

The hill “dell’Orso”, just in front of the Archipelago della Maddalena, stands at 100 m of height in the eastern point of Palau. This huge granite rock has been sculpted into the shape of a bear by millions of years of humidity. The archipelago della Maddalena, located in the north eastern point of Sardinia, consists in 4 main islands close to the coast: Santo Stefano, Caprera, La Maddalena, Spargi, some smaller islands in the southern area of the Bocche di Bonifacio: Budelli, Razzoli, Santa Maria.
